002 | Building and Hosting a Website: Part 1 — Website Builders
Published on May 23, 2025
In the previous article, we talked about domain names — your digital address on the internet. Now it’s time to build the “home” itself — your website. There are many ways to do this, and today we’ll start with the most beginner-friendly option: website builders.
Website Builders: A Quick Start for Everyone
Website builders like Tilda, Wix, or Tinkoff’s Site Builder are online platforms that let you create a site without any programming skills. You simply drag and drop ready-made blocks (text, images, galleries, buttons) into place, then edit their content and style. It’s a great option if you want a nice-looking, functional website quickly without diving into technical complexities.
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
- Simplicity and speed: You can build a website within hours or days, even if you’ve never done it before. Most builders offer a very intuitive interface.
- Visual editor: See what your website looks like in real time as you build it.
- Built-in features: Many include tools for online stores, contact forms, SEO settings, and mobile responsiveness.
- Hosting included: No need to separately find and configure a web host.
- Customer support: Most platforms offer support to help if you get stuck.
Cons:
- Limited flexibility: You’re restricted by the features and templates provided. Custom features may be difficult or impossible to implement.
- Platform lock-in: Moving your site to another platform can be very hard — often requiring a complete rebuild.
- SEO limitations: While basic SEO settings exist, advanced search optimization may be harder than with a custom-coded website.
- Cost: Free plans often include ads or limited features. Full functionality usually requires a paid subscription, which may become more expensive over time than self-hosting.
Free Usage Options:
Many builders offer free plans, but with significant limitations — subdomains, ads from the platform, fewer features, and smaller storage limits. If you’re building a serious project or brand, you’ll likely need to upgrade to a paid plan.
Required Skills and Difficulty Level:
- Skills: Basic understanding of web design principles (layout, typography, color), ability to work with image editors (to prepare visuals), and a general idea of site structure and content.
- Difficulty: Low. This is the easiest way to launch a site. All you need is a mouse, a keyboard, the ability to follow instructions — and a bit of creativity.
Website builders are a great choice for launching quickly, testing ideas, or creating a simple portfolio or landing page. They remove the technical burden so you can focus on content and design.
