n8n: Part 3 — Alternatives: Zapier, Make, Activepieces, Node-RED and Albato

This article belongs to the topic Python and automation.

n8n — not the only visual automation platform. Some services work only in the cloud and charge per action, others are installed on your own server, and some are aimed at developers or data processing. Below are the main alternatives and how they differ from n8n.

Cloud services

Cloud services share advantages: nothing to install or maintain, and you can get started in minutes. Common limitations for a Russian company are also the same:

  • you cannot pay the subscription with a Russian bank card: Visa and Mastercard have not serviced Russian cards abroad since March 2022;
  • workflow data is processed on foreign servers, so for customer requests and other personal data such services contradict the requirements of Federal Law 152-FZ on localization.

Zapier

The best-known automation service. According to Zapier, it works with more than 10,000 apps, so a ready-made integration with a foreign service is almost always available.

A workflow in Zapier (a Zap) is a trigger and one or more actions. Billing is per task: every successfully executed action counts as a task. Pricing as of September 2026 when billed annually:

  • Free — 100 tasks per month, only two-step Zaps: one trigger and one action;
  • Professional — from $19.99 per month for 750 tasks; multi-step Zaps, webhooks, filters and branching; 2,000 tasks cost $49, 10,000 — $129;
  • Team — from $69 per month for 2,000 tasks, up to 25 users, SSO;
  • Enterprise — by agreement.

Zapier is the easiest to learn, but with a large number of actions it becomes noticeably more expensive than n8n: in n8n Cloud you pay per workflow run, whereas in Zapier you pay for each action. You cannot install Zapier on your own server.

Make

Formerly Integromat, now owned by Celonis. Workflows in Make are built on a visual scheme of modules, with branching, loops, error handling and data transformation. In flexibility, Make is closer to n8n than Zapier.

Billing is by credits, which are consumed for module operations. Pricing as of September 2026 when billed annually:

  • Free — 1,000 credits per month, two active scenarios, runs no more often than every 15 minutes;
  • Core — $9 per month, 10,000 credits;
  • Pro — $16 per month, 10,000 credits and advanced features;
  • Teams — $29 per month, 10,000 credits and team collaboration;
  • Enterprise — by agreement.

Make is cheaper than Zapier at comparable volumes, but it also works only in the cloud.

Pipedream

A developer platform: workflow steps can be written in Node.js and Python, and there are over 3,000 ready connectors. In November 2025 Workday announced the acquisition of Pipedream; it is now positioned as a platform for building AI agents. For a small company without developers, Pipedream is excessive.

Russian service: Albato

Albato is a Russian integrations platform. According to the service, it works with more than 1,000 applications, including Bitrix24, amoCRM and Tilda, and its servers are located in Russia. There are plans for a single specialist and for teams, and a 14-day trial period.

Albato’s main advantage over Zapier and Make is ready integrations with Russian services and operation from within Russia without the restrictions related to foreign platforms. For workflows containing customers’ personal data this is an option that does not require your own server. You cannot install Albato on your own server; it is a cloud service.

Systems you can self-host

Activepieces

The platform most similar to n8n in purpose. The Community Edition is distributed under the MIT license — a full open license, unlike n8n’s fair-code; corporate features are moved to a commercial license. There are more than 280 ready integrations (pieces), they are written in TypeScript and published as npm packages, and all integrations are available to AI assistants via the MCP protocol. It is installed via Docker.

Activepieces has fewer integrations than n8n and a younger community. But the MIT license allows embedding the platform into your own product and offering it to your clients without a separate agreement — something the n8n license prohibits.

Node-RED

A flow-based programming tool created in 2013 at IBM; the project is now part of the OpenJS Foundation and distributed under the Apache 2.0 license. Flows are assembled in a visual editor from nodes, like in n8n, but Node-RED was originally designed for event-driven scenarios and working with devices: sensors, controllers, smart home systems and industrial automation.

For integrating CRMs, mail and spreadsheets, Node-RED has fewer ready nodes, and much will have to be done via HTTP requests. For office and sales automation, n8n is more convenient; for devices and event streams — Node-RED is better.

Huginn

An “agents” system under the MIT license: agents monitor websites, feeds and APIs, collect data and perform actions. Huginn is suitable for personal monitoring and data collection, but its interface is significantly less convenient than n8n’s, and there are almost no ready integrations with business services.

Apache Airflow

Airflow addresses a different problem: it schedules and executes data processing pipelines described in Python code. It is used by data engineering teams for loading and transforming large volumes of data. It is not intended for connecting a website, CRM and messenger.

When to choose what

  • Need to quickly connect foreign services, workflows don’t contain customer data, and you have a way to pay in dollars — Zapier for simple workflows, Make for complex logic.
  • Workflows involve Russian services and customer data, and you don’t have your own server — Albato.
  • Need full control over data and no limits on runs — n8n on your own server.
  • Need to embed automation into your own product or offer it to clients — Activepieces: its license allows this.
  • Workflows are related to devices, sensors and event streams — Node-RED.
  • Regular processing of large datasets by engineering teams — Airflow.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing by the number of integrations. What matters is not the total number but the availability of the services you need; foreign platforms often lack integrations for Russian CRMs and marketplaces, and you still have to write HTTP requests.
  • Estimating cost without counting actions. In Zapier, a Zap with a trigger and five actions that runs 500 times a month consumes 2,500 tasks, not 500.
  • Using a cloud service for customer requests. Personal data goes to foreign servers.
  • “Open” n8n in your own product. The n8n license prohibits selling it as a service without an agreement with the developers; for that task Activepieces is suitable.
  • Choosing Airflow or Huginn for office automation. The tool is more complex than the task, and there may be no one to maintain it.
